Travel Theme: Rivers

Where’s My Backpack’s travel theme this week is Rivers. I’ve visited a lot of places with rivers.

The Seine, Paris

The Irwell, Salford, UK

The Tiber, Rome

And speaking of Rome, this fountain in Piazza Navona by Bernini represents four of the greatest rivers in the world. The Fountain of Four Rivers or Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi.  It represents Gods of the four greatest rivers in the then-recognized continents: the Nile in Africa, the Ganges in Asia, the Danube in Europe and the Río de la Plata in America.  (Sorry, Mississippi and Amazon rivers!)

Piazza Navona, Rome

The Thames at Richmond

Niagara River just above the falls

There are a lot of lovely rivers right here in Nova Scotia. They might not be the Mighty Mississippi but they’re scenic just the same.  Here’s one from the island of Cape Breton.

Like the way you included the not so scenic Irwell in your river gallery. I seem to think it has the dubious distinction of being described with some disgust by Engels when he was doing his shocking report on the state of Manchester in the 19th century. It’s so very much better now.

Up to this year, I’ve been in Salford nearly every year for a decade and we’re over this bridge numerous times during my stay. They have cleaned it up quite a lot since my parter was young. All that industry and shipping took its toll.
