WordPress Weekly Challenge – A Work of Art

WordPress’s weekly challenge is A Work of Art. Art is very subjective. Everyone likes something different. What is art for one person isn’t for another. Sometimes interpretation of what art is can be mystifying but the same piece for someone else makes perfect sense.

I do like to visit galleries, museums and exhibits and I don’t always agree that it’s “art” but I don’t begrudge someone else loving what I think is rubbish. Here’s both sides of the coin for me.

From a classic, in the Sistine Chapel, artist Michaelangelo Buonarotti. Photo shot from the hip. Yes, I know. Photography in the chapel is not permitted but it’s so hard to resist. No flash, existing light, a bit of help from photoshop.

The Sistine Chapel

To “What????” This and another identical post were in an installation in the Guggenheim gallery in New York. Modern art mystifies me. I don’t get it.

I so agree, Tvor! Did you ever hear about the piece of modern art which was receiving all kinds of praise and accolades and then it was discovered it was actually hanging upside down? Sigh. As you say, art is subjective.

I’m always left dazed and confused by modern art, and I know for a fact, in the Tate Modern, it’s common to see art enthusiasts taking photographs of the art and then of the explanatory notes. These people are unwilling to give up the fight. They’re determined to study the works, read the explanations at leisure, and get to the bottom of it all. Sadly I don’t share their enthusiasm.

I’ve never gone to the Tate Modern. I know I wouldn’t “get” it! As far as explanatory notes, you always wonder if someone didn’t just make it up out of their imagination, oh it means this and that and delves into the philosophy of something else when really, it’s just a red post with nails in it and it’s not art but if you say it’s about something symbolic, people accept it.

The trick is holding the camera at your waist or on your lap if you are sitting, aim up and say “Hail Mary!” hope for the best. I can’t say all modern art is awful. I have seen some pieces now and then that i like, maybe for the colours or textures or if it’s at least recognizeable, but a lot of it leaves me cold

Oh well that post must be an interpretation of a porcupine of course…. oh wait bare tree…. no I got it a coat rack! ;)
    Sorry couldn’t resist being cheeky.
Some art is out there and OK it is cool to guess and interpret, but this one just looks silly. Really this is in a big museum???

Well, I’m with you on not understanding much contemporary art…that stick with nails loses me…a depiction of suffering? Who knows.
